instilling wonder for the urban environment.

PS 32 is an elementary school located a block away from the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn. Nature Based serves as the environmental educator, designer, builder, and coordinator for the PS 32 school gardens. PS 32 is our ecological education test kitchen. It’s the site of our first educational program and where we cook up our innovative lessons. Nature Based’s curriculum at PS 32 has included sustainable urban farming practices such as no-till farming, cover cropping, mushroom cultivation, composting, seed starting, and aquaponics. We have also taught projects focusing on green infrastructure design, stormwater management, hugelkulturs, food justice issues, healthy communities, urban ecology, and other interesting topics.

“Farmer Fred is an innovative garden teacher at our school. He plans hands-on, real life activities for the kids to learn about our earth. From designing green infrastructure to planting, weeding, harvesting, and cooking, the kids are engaged and always learning. ”
